Founding TCLSarah set up an online support group via Facebook in 2012, and its membership soon took off and evolved into a thriving community. It only seemed natural, following on from that, to form a challenge team featuring members of the support group and others wishing to represent TCL's cause.
"Roller Derby challenges me socially, personally, emotionally and physically, and in this way it is both a comfort and a struggle. Personal growth and change through this sport is incredible but also by necessity isn’t easy - and that’s why the support group has thrived. The opportunity to listen to other people and try to show compassion and understanding helps me to have compassion for myself. The members of the group are kind, insightful, thoughtful, positive, supportive, honest and brave. I knew there were a lot of people out there involved with roller derby who suffered with emotional and long-term health issues, but I still never even dreamed how many people would actually end up joining. No matter how much you think you’re aware of the number of people around you who are struggling, there are always more still - and that’s why it’s so shocking that in our society we are so scared and ashamed to talk about what we’re going through, and why it needs to change.
